A Brief Stop In Pigeon Forge, Tennessee Before Traveling West

My husband has had his private pilot’s license for the past 10 years and recently began working on his instrument rating.   He's been diligently studying and finally felt prepared to sit for the written portion. Wanting to take the exam before our road trip to Yellowstone, The Grand Tetons, and Rocky Mountain National Parks,  we decided to leave a day early and take the exam at the Gatlinburg airport the morning of our flight to Denver.

We chose to stay in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee at the brand new Home2 Suites by Hilton Hotels.  I'm familiar with several of Hilton's properties and choose them often for their family friendly accommodations.

Room

Because we were traveling with my in laws on this trip, I chose Home2 Suites for its larger rooms and bedding for larger families.

Home2 Suites is perfect for families if you need more than two beds. I was impressed with the room size and the amenities. We only paid  $124 US per night for a room with a kitchen area, full sized refrigerator and freezer, as well as a dishwasher and plenty of dishes and utensils. There was no stove, but there was a microwave. We chose a double bedroom with a pull out sofa allowing for 6 people to sleep in a bed. My daughter chose to sleep on the couch cushions on the floor. The beds were very comfortable and everyone woke up refreshed.

Eats

Home2suites not only offers spacious rooms, but they also provide free breakfast included in the price of your room. This is always a great option for our family of five. I was also pleased that, like their sister property, Hampton Inn & Suites, they serve a pancake mix that is safe for my children’s food allergies. We save money and time eating in the hotel, and I always appreciate when it's available.

Facilities & Grounds

After breakfast, I took my coffee outside where I found a great courtyard overlooking the new Island Shopping Center in Pigeon Forge and the beautiful surrounding Smoky Mountains. There is a fire pit surrounded by  plenty of comfortable seating. This made for a perfect place to savor my coffee.

After enjoying my coffee and letting my boys play a bit, we toured the rest of the hotel. The boys were disappointed because we didn't have time to enjoy the outdoor swimming area. I admit, I was a tad disappointed myself.  It's basically a mini water park! There is also a heated indoor pool.

On the back side of the hotel near the pool area there are two large gas grills surrounded by tables and chairs for nice evening grilling.

Service

The front desk staff, housekeeping staff, and kitchen staff were all helpful and friendly. I've mentioned that my children have food allergies so I often have to speak to the kitchen staff regarding their allergies.  Sometimes this doesn't go very well, but in this case the staff gladly brought out the label to the pancake mix for me to read.  This is always my preferred method of confirming the safety of the food for my children.  It's surprising how flippant some people can be with regard to this concern and it ALWAYS ALWAYS influences my opinion.  I am happy to say that in this location, I was cheerfully served and my kids were able to enjoy their breakfast.

Incidentally, I am happy to report that a few hours after leaving for the exam, my husband walked through the hotel door and gave me a thumbs up! Phew, what a relief! Now we could relax,  celebrate, and enjoy the trip ahead of us!

  1. The grilling space is great! I love a full kitchen in the hotel room (so great for saving money while traveling), but I’ve never seen a grill space. That is such a great idea!

  2. I love hotels that have a kitchen too, it just makes me feel more at home. And it’s so nice that this hotel is located by Dollywood – I really want to go there. Glad you enjoyed your stay. Thanks for sharing on #TheWeeklyPostcard.

  3. Sounds like it suited your family very well! I love a well-appointed continental breakfast (more than bagels and orange juice). The room looks stylish and comfortable. I’ve never been to Tennessee before but I want to visit Dollywood! #TheWeeklyPostcard

    • You should! It’s much smaller than Disney, of course, but it’s really growing and they have added so many new rides over the last few years.
