It’s also home to some of the park’s most iconic features, such as Arch Rock and Alum Cave Creek.

The trail also passes through several unique geological features like Alum Cave itself, which is a long tunnel carved by water in the rock face. It is also the highlight of the hike.

Pets are not allowed on this trail.

Is Alum Cave Trail Easy?

Alum Cave Trail is a 5-mile roundtrip hike that follows Alum Cave Creek up to Alum Cave Bluff. Along the way, you’ll pass old-growth forests, cascading streams, and spectacular mountain views. With an elevation gain of 1,200 feet, the trail is steep and follows the edge of the ridge in sections.

This trail also serves as an access point to Mount LeConte. The trailhead can be accessed from Newfound Gap Road, and ample parking is available for those who wish to enjoy the scenic views and nature along Alum Cave Trail.

The Alum Cave Bluff is an especially popular destination via Alum Cave Trail, as it offers up a unique view of the Smoky Mountains.

From here, visitors can look out across the valley and take in stunning views of Mt LeConte, Mount Kephart, and Alum Cave Mountain.

Most people turn around after reaching Alum Cave Bluff, but stunning scenery awaits you if you choose to continue hiking to Mount LeConte.
