Do You Have To Register ATVs in New York?

Yes. All ATVs must be registered with the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) if you plan to ride anywhere in New York State, including even on your own property.

When you register your ATVs for the first time, your registration will expire each year on August 31. If your ATVs were originally registered before April 1, 2005, it will continue to expire each year on April 30.

Can You Ride ATVs in the New York State Forests?

No.

ATVs or off-road vehicles may not be driven off roads on state forests or wildlife management areas.

In all cases, ATVs may only be operated on state land where there are Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) signs that specifically indicate that ATVs are allowed.
