Can you ride ATVs on the road in Tennessee?

Only roads marked for off road vehicle use allow ATVs. Riders are encouraged to always use only designated roads and trails in TN, and be aware of private property and prohibited access roads.

While ATV helmets are not required in the state of TN to ride an ATV, we strongly recommend you wear one anyway, as well as ATV gloves and other appropriate protective gear.

Most ATV parks and trail systems will require some sort of special use Motorsport. The North Cumberland Wildlife Management Area (WMA) states, that “a special use permit is required for ATV riders unless they are properly licensed hunters or under age 13.”

Doe Mountain Recreation Area-Mountain City, TN

The Doe Mountain Recreation Area is located in northeast Tennessee outside the small rural community of Mountain City. 

The wildlife region is 8300 acres and has 50 miles of blazed multi-use trails for all types of OHV vehicles including ATV/UTV and dirt bikes.

4×4’s are not allowed.

Permits are required and can be purchased online at the Adventure Center, and at some of the local campgrounds.

Bluff Mountain Adventure Trail Rides- Pigeon Forge, TN

Eleven million visitors make the Smoky Mountains their go to vacation destination every year. 

Who can blame them with nearby Gatlinburg, Pigeon Forge, and the Great Smoky Mountain National Park to visit.

Brimstone ATV park is open 365 days and has a trail for every skill level.  There are over 300 miles of OHV trails within the over 19,000 acres of Northeast Tennessee wilderness.

You can also do some camping at Brimstone Off Road Park.

Trails End Campground- Hunstville, TN

Trails End Campground is also located in Huntsville is a great base for accessing the more than 150,000 acres of North Cumberland Wilderness Area with more than 600 miles of multi-use OHV trails for your ATV riding pleasure! 

You can leave your campsite and access three different areas of trails 24 hours a day. 

However, it is advisable to plan ahead and ensure you have plenty of food and fuel.
