Best Permanent Laser Hair Removal Machine: Never Shave While Traveling Again!

As one who loves to travel moving from hotel to hotel and, often, climate to climate, I’m always looking for ways to simplify my hygiene routine. One thing I have always wanted was to find a way to decrease the time I spend shaving. Utilizing an at home laser hair removal machine has proved to be well worth it.

In fact for years I talked about the desire to have an at home laser hair machine, but I was always afraid to try it. I’m so glad my husband decided to do some research and purchased me a Remington iLIGHT Pro At-Home IPL Hair Removal System a few years ago.

It’s great being able to do laser hair removal at home which cuts down on my need to shave while I’m traveling. However, because I’m not exactly the most consistent with using my device, I decided I would love to find a more permanent hair removal system. I discovered that there is now a new option for permanent at home hair removal on the market. The Tria Beauty Hair Removal Laser 4X is the only FDA approved at home laser that utilizes the same in-office Diode Laser Technology used by dermatologists.

Is At Home Laser Hair Removal Safe?

With any new technology, risks are always inherent. For years I was afraid to use a laser hair removal device because I was afraid they could burn or permanently scar my skin. However, studies have been done on these devices that demonstrate both the IPL and the laser system when used appropriately are safe and very effective. Of course, we recommend you consult a physician’s advice before using an at home laser. We also highly recommend you thoroughly review the instructions in your at home laser machine to avoid misuse, burns, or damage to your skin or eyes. Each device will have different parameters and recommendations so it’s important to review the instructions carefully to avoid injury.

How Does Laser Hair Removal Work?

Whether you are using IPL or a concentrated laser, the principal is essentially the same. Light energy is absorbed by areas with high pigmentation. In this case the hairs themselves. Concentrated light is focused upon the hair follicle and because the hairs possess pigment, the light energy is absorbed and produces heat which damages the follicle resulting in death to the hair.

Both the IPL and the laser hair removal systems operate on essentially the same principal. The main difference is that the IPL is a broad spectrum light which spreads out and the laser is a more highly concentrated single spectrum light which can penetrate more deeply but not as widely spread.

Because the light energy is absorbed by melanin, those with darker skin tones may experience more pain with an IPL device vs. a concentrated laser and may also experience darkening or blotching spots of the skin. It is important to choose your IPL device carefully because of this. Most manufacturers offer a charting system, such as the one here on Tria, which enables you to select your skin tone and hair color to determine if their device is suitable. Because the varying degrees of darker skin tones and suitability of each device is beyond the scope of this article, we recommend those with darker skin tones consult a physician before deciding on the most appropriate, if any, IPL or laser for permanent hair removal.

How Much Is An At Home Laser Hair Removal Machine?

The cost of an at home IPL or Laser hair removal machine varies widely. I found devices as low as $70 to as high as $3500 available on Amazon. The average professional laser hair removal session is around $250 and requires 3 to 7 sessions to achieve permanent hair removal. These prices may sound high, but when you consider a lifetime of razors or smelly hair removal creams, the affordability of an at home hair removal laser seems reasonable. If you consider purchasing the Tria which promises permanent hair removal after 6 treatments and comes in just under the $500 mark, then permanent hair removal just became cheap!

Is Laser Hair Removal Permanent?

Despite having the word, “permanent” in many of their product names, Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) does NOT permanently remove hair. While IPL dramatically reduces the total number of body hairs and it will require fewer treatments over time, it does not permanently remove hair and you will always still require treatments. In short, laser hair removal is also not permanent, however, the more focused Diode laser treatment, such as the one used in the TRIA Laser 4X is more concentrated and more likely to destroy the hair follicle which can lead to permanently eliminating hair growth.

What is Better IPL or Laser hair removal?

Many of the IPL at home hair removal machines are very affordable and can achieve a reduction in hair of nearly 80% over time so if upfront cost is an issue and you don’t mind continuing treatments over time, then an IPL may be the best option for you. The broader spectrum of the IPL also allows you to achieve your treatment in a more timely fashion since it can cover a larger area with each light flash. However, after reviewing the two types of laser hair removal systems for home use, I’ve decided that the TRIA Laser 4X is better because you can achieve near permanent hair removal.
