Hotel Review: Westin Hilton Head Island Resort and Spa
Starwood Hotels consistently offer a fabulous product. Westin Hilton Head Island Resort & Spa is no exception. Last year we opened the Starwood American Express to gain greater status in the SPG Preferred Guest Loyalty Program. We recognized our tendency to seek SPG properties while traveling and with the recent Marriott and Starwood Hotels merger, our portfolio of options have greatly expanded. In fact, I read on johnnyjet.com that Marriott is offering 100K points in their latest credit card offer. I’m seriously tempted to consider this! Points are as valuable to money when it comes to travel!
The following review is from our recent stay at the Westin Hilton Head Island Resort & Spa. A few months ago TravelZoo posted a deal for the Westin for $99/night. That is an amazing deal! I quickly hopped online, checked the dates surrounding my birthday and was pleasantly surprised to find that the ocean front king was only $139. That is an amazing price for this hotel.
Our ocean front room was clean and well-appointed with the usual Westin touches we appreciate. The bathroom had a double vanity and a lighted magnifying mirror. I always appreciate this feature. The flooring is partially carpet in the bedroom area and what seems to be a faux wood laminate or vinyl flooring in the bathroom and foyer areas. The well-appointed bed is very comfortable with ample pillows and very warm and adequate bed coverings. There is a refrigerator, flat screen TV, lounge chair, single cup coffee maker with adequate supplies, and a desk area. Everything appeared to be in good working order and clean. The balcony has chairs for relaxing with your coffee in the morning while watching the sun rise over the ocean!
There are five dining locations at the Westin Hilton Head Island.
The Carolina Room, is “an upscale dining experience featuring modern cuisine infused with a Lowcountry twist. The highest quality, locally sourced seafood, meats and produce are featured daily – with a “Farm & Sea to Table” fresh menu.”
We planned to have a late lunch here on our first day, but instead we were offered the menu for the View 32. We found the selection to be limited for the price and being our first day in town we decided instead to ride our bikes to Skull Creek Boathouse. However, we have eaten dinner in the Carolina Room previously and thoroughly enjoyed it. We did return to the bar also on our second night just before closing for burgers and wings. The burger was cooked correctly and the wings were excellent.
View 32 is an outdoor restaurant and bar. Their hours are listed as 11:00 am-10:00 pm with a seasonal and weather permitting disclaimer.
Ingredients is a coffee and sandwich deli located in the lobby. We didn’t eat there on this trip, but they serve the usual fare such as Starbucks coffee, smoothies, and on the go sandwiches, soft drinks and snacks.
There are also two other locations listed on the website. We have visited both in early spring and mid Fall, but never in the summer so apparently these venues are not open during those times. Oceans is described as “a casual comfort restaurant and bar with a family friendly atmosphere.” and Splash is a poolside bar that also is only opened seasonally.
The front desk service at this Westin has been lacking in the past. Unfortunately, there seems to be some hesitation toward upgrades and honoring our Gold status as SPG members. While this was disappointing, overall it had little impact on our enjoyment of this resort.
We thoroughly enjoyed the couples massage at Westin’s full service Spa. The staff were extremely outgoing and friendly, but not talkative during the massage which I GREATLY appreciate!
There is a considerable amount of construction and renovation going on throughout the hotel including an addition of wedding facilities. None of this took away from my overall enjoyment of the resort, but it is worth noting. The baseboards are being replaced on several floors and there are areas of carpet that need attention. I am not sure how much damage, if any, the Westin received in October during Hurricane Matthew, but I suspect some of what we saw may be due to the storm.
