With that, visitors should pack both a totally waterproof rain jacket and top and shorts/pants when the temperature turns warm.

The Smoky Mountains are less crowded in September than at other times of the year.
This month is a great time to visit the Smokies as the summer visitors start to subside and the leaf watchers have yet to arrive in October.
However, you can still expect to see some crowds during peak times, such as weekends and holidays.

Festivals & Events in Smoky Mountains in September
- Pigeon Forge Rod Run (September 17–19, 2026): The Pigeon Forge Rod Run is an annual event that takes place in September. It is one of the largest car shows in the Smoky Mountains and features a wide variety of classic cars and hot rods. The event also includes live music, food vendors, and car-related merchandise.
- GatlinBURGER Week (Sept 11 – Sept 18, 2026): This week-long event invites locals and visitors to indulge in delicious, creatively crafted burgers from a variety of participating restaurants. - Bear-Varian Fall Festival at Anakeesta (Aug 28 – Nov 1, 2026): Celebrates the beauty of autumn in the Smoky Mountains with festive fall decorations, seasonal entertainment, delicious treats, and fun activities for the whole family.
- Smoky Mountain Fallfest 2026 (Sep 26, 2026): Located at the Sevierville Fairgrounds. Enjoy a day filled with live entertainment, local vendors, delicious food, family-friendly activities, and the welcoming spirit of the Smoky Mountains.
